Amanda Wakeley AW13 – “Clean Glam”
Last week I was invited to one of those fashion evenings I adore. Champagne, cupcakes, a private London address, with a fabulous label allowing you to have a sneak peak at their collection. This time it was British fashion designer Amanda Wakeley and her labels’s Autumn/Winter 13 collection.
At this intimate gathering, the CEO of Amanda Wakeley explained how the roots in their DNA is all about evening dresses; that is what the label is known for but there is a fun core to the brand that has a wider scope, and they want to evolve products for all life situations. This is the labels new ethos for the next few seasons and Autumn/Winter 13 is all about the essence of the brand “Clean Glam”. Simple yet glamourous silhouettes.
A touch of glamour is very important to the DNA of the brand and for the AW13 collection, Amanda Wakeley explores elements of romance and softness reminiscent of Doctor Zhivago and Imperial Russia; with the heritage, opulence and mystery it conjures up.
AW13 – Clean Glam
For “Clean Glam” as an ethos, it is all about the brand’s interpretation of the chic, modern woman and how she styles herself for both work and play. Striking the right balance between the textures and the textiles associated with a winter wardrobe have remained core with the development of the collection’s fur offering and other outerwear elements. Check me out in a gorgeous fur gilet, available in fawn, red and black. It was so lush! Perfect for what should have been a Spring evening!
Throughout the evening we could try on pieces that took our fancy and explore the collection close up. There were two models sporting different styles and the evening dresses that Amanda Wakeley is so well known for did wow us.
Amanda Wakeley is all about promoting the brand as a London brand, rather than a British brand. Only last week in the press there was the piece about how London should remove itself from Britain. That it really does have its own style, focus, concepts and independent feel. Luxury London lifestyle is centric to the brand and now rather than just being about evening pieces; Amanda Wakeley is all about the separates as “hero pieces for both the day and the evening”. It’s all about mixing up with existing pieces in your wardrobe.
We saw hot burnt orange ( in the fashion world, cinnamon), berry pink and spicy red, mixing with blacks and muted tans and luxurious petrol blue. Of course there were evening dresses to die for and Miss K who accompanied me to the event was pretty hooked (excuse the pun!) on what she called “Peter Pan clutches” – we love the hook closing mechanism and in so many great colours.
The Autumn/Winter 13 collection is a versatile one; a casual look – some would say unlike the Amanda Wakeley of old. But this is a revoluition – a London revolution. Broadening the label beyond long cocktail dresses.
