Anya Sushko Handbags – Rose Red Severina Clutch Review
In the last few weeks we have been talking a lot about online bag destination BagServant.co.uk. You may have noticed that LadyM is on the judging panel for their design a handbag competition. Well she also sported an Anya Sushko clutch bag (available at BagServant) to London Fashion Week and cocktails at Claridge’s so we thought we would find out more about the designer and of course review the bag!
Anya Sushko Handbag Label
Anna Sushko is the designer behind the London based handbag label Anya Sushko. Anna started the brand in 2007 shortly afters graduating from Central Saint Martins and after learning the ropes at Alexander McQueen’s studio in London. Anna worked on some of his couture collections shown at Paris Fashion Week. We thought we would get to know more about Anna and her label by asking a few of our questions form the interview series we ran last year, so here goes:
Q. What encouraged you to get into this industry and what was your route into it?
Straight after graduating and with the encouragement of my mentor, I decided to start my own business as I had the vision and the drive. I guess it was a very ambitious decision as I was young but I don’t regret it because it drives me to work harder and to never settle!
Q. What is a typical working day for you?
Less glamorous than what one might imagine it is like! My day starts quite early – sometimes I’d be on my computer at about 6.30am, going through e-mails or catching up on admin. I am usually in the Studio, which gladly is right next to my flat, at about 8 – 8.30am. I work on sketching, drawing and making for the entire day – some days I would pop out to a supplier, to search for leather or other materials. When I need to feel inspired, I would see an exhibition somewhere in town. But most days are spent in the studio, working!
Q. What do you love the most about having your own handbag label?
The opportunity to unleash my creative potential. The freedom to create and use my imagination. Letting myself be inspired and translating this into tangible creations. Being able to run my own business and make my own decision is something I value every day.
Q. Where are you based, how much of an inspiration is your city and what are your favourite cities around the world?
London, UK. It is the most dynamic city I have known and I often draw inspiration from its colourfulness and dynamic of life – it’s a melting pot of cultures, people and destinies, which makes it unique. It is also entrepreneurial and driven, which is why it gives people like myself the opportunity to explore it.
I am also in love in Riga, the beautiful capital of my home country Latvia. The nature and architecture are striking, serene, beautiful! Quite often I like to go for a walk into down town. It is very ambient place where you are surrounded by old brick buildings from 18th Century.
I also love Rome for its powerful and stunning buildings, Innsbruck which sits in the middle of the beautiful mountains, Salzburg where Mozart was born. Switzerland is one of the most beautiful countries. But all in all there are so many amazing places in the worlds and it is almost impossible to choose a single favourite one!
Q. How would you sum up what you do in one sentence?
Independent, risk-taking, ambitious creator and designer with a vision!
Q. Who would you love to see wearing a Anya Sushko handbag?
Dita von Teese. She embodies the strong, independent women, who are not afraid to show off their individual style, whom I think of when I design.
Q. Have you seen the fashion industry or change in the last few years, have you had to adapt?
Yes, the fashion industry is anything but stale. The effect on social media and the internet have transformed it from an elitist, often closed off world, to one which is available to everyone who is interested in it, to consume. We get much more nowadays; we can consume and have more. This is why I believe that quality is more important than ever.
Globalisation has also had an enormous effect on fashion as a business. One can no longer design for the women of London, one designs for the women born in London, working in Paris, vacationing in Barbados and travelling to Tokyo. The customer perceptions are not the same either.
Q. What’s the most rewarding part of your work? What is your greatest accomplishment so far?
I have been honoured to receive great feedback and endorsements from the industry – from other designers, from several buyers for high profile stores, from the media – which I am extremely grateful and happy about. Still, the best is when a customer gets in touch and orders a bag, especially when you realise how much it can mean to them – I’ve had clients ordering bags for weddings or for anniversaries and it’s always beautiful to see and feel the human story behind a purchase.
Q. What is next for yourself and Anya Sushko ? What are your goals for 2013?
Ideally, I would like to be an established brand known for amazing stunning top quality bags – modern luxury. In 2013, I would like to see my bags in more boutiques and countries and more importantly – worn by stylish, cosmopolitan women everywhere!
I also extremely appreciate my recent collaboration with Bag Servant. It has provided my business one of the best opportunities in 2012 and I look forward to a long term and fruitful relationship with them.
In fact just last week LadyM Presents announced the collaboration between Lenka Gourdie of BagServant with Anna to launch their own handbag range.
Rose Red Severina
LadyM was lucky enough to be lent an Anya Sushko clutch bag for London Fashion Week. From the SS13 Anya Sushko range, the Severina is made of rose red cowhide leather with gold hardware and also comes with a strap to make it a small shoulder bag as well as a clutch.
The Severina chain bag ticks all the boxes fashion-wise. In striking bright red leather with a single chain shoulder strap, it’s perfect for girls nights out, dinner dates, or even casual afternoons without the need for all your everyday extra baggage. An elegant touch to any outfit, plus this meant another shot at embracing red – one of LadyM’s New Year Resolutions.
This is a luxurious bag. The detailing on the leather is superb and warranted a lot of cooing from friends. It was a perfect size for fitting two phones, a purse, fashion week invites, makeup, all the essentials in. It really brings out any outfit, with the vibrant colour without being over the top or brash. The gold works really well with the red and it really sets off any outfit that is worn with it.
It is an expensive clutch, but totally worth it. You will wear this to numerous occasions. Whether it is looking great at Claridges with a matching cocktail to looking elegant for a business dinner or wedding accessory. The exterior is strong, rigid red leather with detailing, whilst the interior has a beautifully designed lining and an inner pocket perfect for keys or business cards or any essentials you need to grab quickly.
Plus the chain strap clips on and off, which was perfect for LadyM – a lover of the clutch! Wear it in the hand as a clutch or clip back on the strap to sport a shoulder bag.
Anya Sushko has a great range of bags for any occasion – you can check them out here.
