Bra Bank campaign launches to help kick out poverty in Brazil
Today we did our World Cup sweepstake at the office. I drew the Netherlands and Greece; I don’t reckon on my chances of winning much! Now the next month of so will be full of bizarrely timed football games, Brazilian food promotions in supermarkets and a lot of chat at the water cooler of “Did you see the game?”. I don’t really have much interest to be honest as I’m a rugby kinda a gal but so lets move the focus away from the World Cup and onto cup size!
During the World Cup we are calling on all ladies to donate your bras to Bra Bank. With a special campaign to help kids living in one of Rio de Janeiro (host city of the 2014 World Cup)’s poorest favelas; how can you help? By donating your unwanted lingerie and underwear!
Ladies can drop off their bras at 17 of Eclectic Bars’ clubs and bars venues across the Country – from Polynesian paradise Lola Lo to Moroccan hang-out Po Na Na. Bra Bank will accept lingerie in any condition, meaning underwear that might otherwise have gone to landfill can now help to change young people’s lives.
The collected bras will be recycled raising £1 per kilo and donations will be accepted for four weeks from the 14th June.
Cash raised goes to ‘Little Learners’ an education project run by charity, the Flamingo Foundation. The scheme provides teachers to help children living in Parada de Lucas – one of Rio’s poorest favelas, the slums of the city. The impoverished community in which Little Learners is based is under the control of heavily armed teen gang members, and young people here are at constant risk of becoming involved in the armed drugs trade.
Neuza Nascimento (pictured in our main feature image), runs Little Learners and says: “Parada de Lucas is an impoverished community and, because of the dominant armed drugs trade, our children often lose their innocence so young. Little Learners gives youngsters the opportunity to get an education, which we believe is the best route out of poverty and away from the gangs. We aim to develop and stimulate the abilities of these kids exposed to the risk of social violence, through activities involving culture, leisure and citizenship. It has been incredibly successful so far, with just 7 of the 900 children who have participated ending up as gang members.”
To entice as many ladies as possible to come along to donate their bras and as a special incentive, on the World Cup launch night, 14th June, anyone who gifts an old bra will receive free entry as a thank you – so why not raid your wardrobe!
The drop off point venues have also created a range of bespoke World Cup themed cocktails and shooters, available on all nights that England are playing.
Grace Leedham, (pictured above) is the Marketing Executive for Eclectic Bars said: “Most women will have bras that they no longer wear lurking in the back of their underwear drawer, and this campaign is a great way to put them to good use.
“Simply by donating their old bras, women can help support young people in Brazil to have access to education and lift themselves, and their families out of poverty. It’s a good excuse for all those ‘World Cup widows’ out there to treat themselves to some new lingerie while the football is on too!”
You can drop off your old bras at the following venues:
- Sakura – Manchester, Reading
- Fez – Cambridge, Putney
- Lola Lo – Bournemouth, Brighton, Cambridge, Derby, Edinburgh, Lincoln, Manchester, Norwich, Oxford,Reading
- Po Na Na – Bath, Bristol, Wimbledon
- Coalition – Brighton

It’s a good excuse to treat yourself to some new, well fitting bras whilst you have a good summer clear out of your own lingerie drawer.
