British Fashion Awards 2012 – The Winners

Oh the glitz and the glamour! On Tuesday 27th November, the LadyM Presents Team headed to the Savoy Theatre, on The Strand in London for the British Fashion Awards 2012. It’s a perfect location for such event; an intimate theatre with an amazing backdrop of a heritage London hotel.

With invitations in hand, we sipped on some bubbly and worked our way through the nominations to put our bets on who the winners would be… we got nine out of twelve correct in the end so we feel pretty chuffed with our fashionable selves. Stella McCartney was crowned Designer of the Year – check out Salma Hayek giving her the award right here:

So we took our seats Front Row in the Grand Circle, ready for the British Fashion Awards 2012. They didn’t disappoint. Well maybe slightly… Nick Grimshaw with his hands in his pockets or arms folded, didn’t really seem like the best host for the evening…. he looked a tad uncomfortable. But former Bond Girl Gemma Arterton did a better job, we just wish she’d worn a dress rather than an odd trouser suit with wedges. Anyway… on to better things; the winners of the night.

British Style Award

This is the only award of the evening decided by public vote, and sponsored by Vodafone. There was a general consensus that twice previous winner Alexa Chung would make it third time lucky… and she did. Her award was presented to her by a legend of the fashion world; none other than Valentino himself. As Alexa said, she’s based in New York now, so it’s nice to know she’s missed back in London!

Emerging Talent Award – Ready to Wear

This award is all about the innovative and directional designer, emerging as an influential force in the British fashion industry – the nominees were JW Anderson, Simone Rocha and Michael van der Ham…. with JW Anderson being the winner.

Emerging Talent Award – Accessories

Described as not just the periphery of the fashion world; Accessories are the added bonus to collections and also can be showstoppers in their own right. The nominees for this category were; Dominic Jones, Jordan Askill and Sophie Hulme. Our favourite for the award, Sophie Hulme won and collected the award carrying one of her signature clutch bags.

Emerging Talent Award – Menswear

The emerging legend that is Jonathan Saunders won this category; facing tough competition from fellow menswear designers Agi & Sam and Lou Dalton. But having cut a fine niche in the womenswear side of the business, he transcended well into menswear to rave reviews.

Red Carpet Award

The award for creating showstoppers on the red carpet. For celebrities this is their time to shine, to have a dress designed to their needs or to showcase their favourite designers. Everyone thought that Victoria Beckham would have this award in the bag. But as well as Alessandra Rich and Stella McCartney being in the running; the award went to a very gracious Roksanda Illincic.

Accessory Designer

The leading British designer of shoes, jewellery, millinery or accessories within the past year is celebrated with this award. Katie Hillier, Nicholas Kirkwood and Philip Treacy were nominees in this category. However, it was the talented Nicholas Kirkwood that shone through and received the accolade; giving thanks in his speech to his one time employer and fellow nominee, Philip Treacy.

Designer Brand

The leading British based designer brand that has excelled in the last year and made an impact on an international scale is celebrated with this award. Model Amber Valletta announced the winner, from the list of nominees; Alexander McQueen (who can forget the Royal Wedding?), Burberry (and their digital showroom), Mulberry (bringing manufacturing back to the UK), and Stella McCartney (The London Olympics, need we say more?). Unsurprisingly the winner was Stella McCartney who told us a fabulous tale of moving from Paris to London and her strong belief she could make a truly international brand, based in London and headed by a woman. Well she has done it!

Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator

This award included nominations from British stylists, makeup artists, photographers, art directors and producers who creativity has been a major inspiration and influence in the past year. There was no doubt who this award should go to. London Fashion Week this year had 17 graduates from Central St Martins who all came out from under the wings of Professor Louise Wilson OBE. She is highly commended in her work in the fashion industry, and this award just goes to prove this.

British Model of the Year

Much excitement was occurring with the prospect of male supermodel David Gandy being at the Savoy Theatre. Since he was nominated for the British Fashion Awards Model of the Year 2012 alongside Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn. Sadly he did not win but we are very pleased that Cara Delevingne did, after a very successful year in the model industry.

New Establishment Award

This award recognises a particular movement in British fashion that is taking the industry by storm. Presented by Samantha Cameron, Ambassador for the British Fashion Council – there was no guessing who had won when she emerged wearing Erdem. A fabulous speech was given by Erdem Moralioğlu, and the genuine love for his hard work and dedication was clear to see in the audience.

Menswear Designer

As you know, we are not great writers of menswear here at LadyM Presents. We don’t feature it too much as is not a specialist subject of ours. But tonight was the night for some big names in the field. Nominees included Kim Jones for Louis Vuitton, Richard James and Oliver Spencer. A heavily pregnant Lily Cooper (nee Allen) presented the award to a very humbled Kim Jones, menswear designer at Louis Vuitton.

Designer of the Year 2012

The British Fashion Awards Designer of the Year award is highly contended. The nominees this year were Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou and Stella McCartney. They have all worked immensely hard to bring their fashion brand to an internationally recognised and acclaimed level and to shape of fashion in the past year both in the UK and internationally.

Although we would have loved our favourite Mary Katrantzou to win, the award went to Stella McCartney; following an outstanding year for her label and for herself with her huge part in the London 2012 Olympics and everything it brought with it. Congratulations Stella!

It was an all round fabulous evening, celebrating all things fabulous about British Fashion.
