Deryn Schmidt “Capture This” – New Zealand Fashion Week 2013

Day two of New Zealand Fashion Week opened with Wellington designer Deryn Schmidt and her Winter 14 collection entitled Capture This. The inspiration for the collection came from a photograph taken by Schmidt’s four year old daughter, Millicent. The image has been adapted into the first exclusive Deryn Schmidt textile print and I just adore it. Wellington graphic designer Andrea Stark has taken the image from the photograph and into a great graphic used on beautiful silk cotton fabric throughout the collection.

What I loved about Deryn Schmidt‘s latest collection was the softness of the printed silk cottons next to the richer textures of 100% New Zealand made knitwear complementing the collection. We’re not talking chunky knits and cardis here but intriguing elements of design. Silk dresses with knitted sleeves, collars and cuffs not just general knitwear. It was clever incorporation of the heritage of New Zealand in a forward thinking, meticulously detailed collection.

The signature print was seen throughout the collection; in silk camisoles teamed with black lace skirts and matching silk jacket with black knitted sleeves, to high collared, button up blouses with a sheet panel and the print, teamed with smart black trousers. There was a great use of corduroy throughout the collection in a deep red and black – especially in a very Elizabethan style jacket. The textures gave true depth to the collection for Winter 14.

There was softness and light, echoing from the centre of the signature image, emulating in pale pinks and oatmeals in knitwear capes over silk dresses. Beautiful Mid West America style clip over long dresses with long sleeve blouses worn underneath and some fabulously tailored jackets.

This collection felt rich, yet warm. Like we were looking down the lens of the camera on the importunity Winter presents. Depth came from the textiles used whilst light and dark came from the fabulous array of pinks, reds, blacks and oatmeals and then a blast of coral in the last few looks to remind us Winter doesn’t have to be all about darker tones. Possibly the best collection seen from Deryn Schmidt yet.
