Designer Selection Show – New Zealand Fashion Week 2012

Designers at New Zealand Fashion Week are adapting their shows to make the event work to their advantage. Rumour has it that NZFW might struggle to continue unless it can be successful, it’s only held once a year and traditionally shows Autumn/Winter collections.

Not all designers are showing a season ahead – Ruby and Huffer use the event as a spotlight to presents collections that will be in store much sooner. Ruby, a favourite when I visited Wellington recently launched a “Fashion Week” collection that was in store this week.

Designers hope to get media exposure and stockists at this trade show that hides behind the glitz and glamour. One way of picking up sales is the Designer Selection Show that the general public can attend as well as the media and fashionistas of Auckland and the rest of New Zealand. A show that brings together collections from across New Zealand’s fashion industry – mixing current collections (Spring/Summer) with previews of up and coming Autumn/Winter collections, getting those buying sells buzzing.

The show opened with Kagi jewellery matched with simple swimwear – check out more of the Kagi Spring/Summer Birds of Paradise Collection here. There was summer florals and leather peplums from Stolen Girlfriends Club and layered chiffons and funky prints from Blak.

I love that Cybele has matching shoes throughout the catwalk, something I always note at London Fashion Week and think it puts a collection together nicely. We saw Surface Too Deep swimwear, again heavily floral accents here and then a mix of Silence Was and Huffer with relaxed, casual approaches to summer casual attire.

Andrea Moore mixed my two favourite colours at the moment – coral pink and cobalt blue in a spots and stripes combination and gorgeous cat cameo print tops and dresses. Trelise Cooper headed down the runway again showing a mix of the new season Winter 2013 we saw the previous night which you can check out here and current Summer Collection for her main line and Coop by Trelise Cooper – to the soundtrack of Gramophonedzie “Why Don’t You”, there was glamour and sparkle, evening dresses and sharp suits and models having fun as they walked the catwalk.

It was a splendid mix of seasons, designers and concepts with a feel of floral, heady days of summer ready to hit the southern hemisphere – get shopping fashionistas of New Zealand.. in light of recent headlines of too much offshore, online shopping at Net-A-Porter and ASOS… your country’s economy needs you to shop locally at New Zealand designers, so get on it!
