SparkRebel – the online discovery tool for fashion
We interviewed Lindsay Anvik, SparkRebel’s Director of Marketing to find out more about the idea behind the website.
What is the concept behind SparkRebel? What started the idea off?
SparkRebel is a fashion-inspired discovery and social shopping destination.
The site is a place where both fashion aficionados and casual visitors can collaborate and become a visual sounding board for one another. SparkRebel is designed to emulate the social experience of shopping with friends by removing barriers to traditional online content organization. Based on individual style, members create collections from 20 fashion and beauty categories and curate content from all over the Internet for others to discover and purchase.
The idea for SparkRebel stemmed from the founder’s first fashion-focused site called PlumWillow. After seeing the success of PlumWillow as a destination for teenaged girls to plan and purchase outfits, our team decided it would be relevant to create a place for adult women to discover and purchase fashion and beauty items in a social and visually-driven platform.
Who are your target audiences for the website?
SparkRebel has two target audiences. Our first audience is women who have a strong interest in fashion and beauty and want to keep up with their favorite brands, as well as discover and purchase new things in a visual-driven and social setting.
We also seek to create strong relationships with fashion and beauty brands, bloggers and publications that want to curate their own pages and directly reach loyal and potential followers.
What are the benefits for the user?
With SparkRebel, members can be more directed in their shopping if they chose by following brands and other members, but at the same time experience the fun of discovering new things that provoke ‘ah-ha’ moments.
SparkRebel eliminates the frustration of having to spend time searching for products across multiple retailers. With SparkRebel’s shop page, users can search and find products from multiple brands all in one place and drill down by item, color, size, price, etc. While not all images that members spark can be clicked through to purchase, many link directly to the retailer’s site where shoppers can purchase their newfound item.
Members can also become fashion tastemakers by consistently sparking, re-sparking and broadcasting interesting products and content to their followers. One person’s fantasy is another person’s discovery, which becomes another person’s purchase. While fashion and beauty unite SparkRebel members, everyone has a personal style, and the site harnesses these differences in a joyful way.
What is the most popular channel on the site?
SparkRebel has several highly popular channels including Celeb Style and Red Carpet, Fashion Disasters, Look for Less, DIY Fashion & Beauty and Shoes.
What do you hope to achieve with SparkRebel?
SparkRebel wants to revolutionize the ecommerce experience for women. We couple a visually arresting site with personalized and engaging content to make shopping online more dynamic and exciting.
Is there just a following in the US or also internationally?
The U.S. currently represents 54 percent of SparkRebel’s visitors; the rest is international with Canada and the U.K at the top of international visits.
Is Pinterest your closest competitor?
We believe there will always be room for vertical-specific solutions and all-purpose solutions in the image curation space. SparkRebel focuses solely on fashion and beauty, and we think this model coupled with a strong e-commerce platform will allow us to stay ahead in terms of product-offering depth. We have several fashion-related features planned that would not make sense for a platform that addresses everything for everyone.
What is next for SparkRebel?
SparkRebel plans to remain focused on the fashion and beauty vertical and continue to serve this niche audience. We are a technology-driven company and plan to keep innovating and only add features that provide a benefit to our members.
