Fashion That Has Survived the Test of Time: Eternity Rings

Over the years we have seen many styles or fashion go full cycle, with the stylish and immaculate dresses & suits of the Mad Men era are once again popular thanks mainly to the HBO hit programme, just one example of this full circle effect.

The story of eternity rings is slightly different, their history is full of intrigue and significance and mostly importantly, they are still popular today thanks in part to the change in styles that have occurred over the years, with eternity rings adapting to changing tastes and customers.

Fashion That Has Survived the Test of Time: Eternity Rings

Eternity rings are steeped in tradition and style, their history can be traced back over 4000 years to ancient Egypt and although the significance and tradition surrounding eternity rings remains, the design and styles found today are considerably different. Like all fashion accessories and garments, styles change with the seasons and what was popular ten years ago has been replaced with the latest style, eternity rings however have a history far longer than even the most popular garments. In ancient Egypt, rings portraying a snake swallowing its own tail intended to signify eternal love were presented by men to their loved ones and this presentation of ‘endless’ love has been a significant part of eternity rings ever since.

Although eternity rings today no longer feature snakes swallowing their own tail, this symbolic importance of endless love has instead been replaced by rings made up of luxurious gemstones. Throughout the 18th century these gemstones would be up of any lavish stones that were available at the time but this all changed in the 20th century with times slightly more comfortable a marketing campaign illustrating the glamorous side of diamonds changed eternity rings forever and have been a girl’s best friend ever since.

Changing styles of eternity rings

The stones making up an eternity ring are not the only important factor in a glamorous ring. The precious metal it is made from is also an important feature that has changed with the fashion seasons. Traditionally yellow gold had dominated the market, however in recent year’s white gold and in particular luxurious platinum has risen in popularity and reputation with several celebrities including Adele and Megan Fox wearing this type of eternity ring. The difference between the two styles couldn’t be further apart and is an example of changing styles from more bold fashion accessories to more passive elegant styles. Yellow gold is rather bold at first glance, it catches the eye with its dazzling colour against the gleaming gemstones, however platinum is somewhat different. Although maybe not as impactful as yellow gold at first glance, platinum’s beauty lies in the fact that it isn’t as loud and its effect is far more subtle but equally as stunning.

One of the main reasons that platinum has grown in popularity is not only due to the luxurious perception that consumers have of it, but is the way it works so well with many gemstones particularly diamonds. A beautiful platinum finish complements diamonds superbly as if the two were made to go together. Although beautiful in design, the symbolic meaning behind eternity rings should never be forgotten. This is where eternity rings really set themselves apart from other pieces of jewellery with their history dating back as far as ancient Egypt and the traditional meaning of eternal love, the giving of an eternity ring as a gift is a significant event no matter how styles have changed.

What’s not to love about these elegant pieces of jewellery? Their stunning craft, the beautiful diamonds and their forever lasting significance combine to create something special.
