So your summer holiday is booked, the countdown has begun and you’ve got your passports at the ready – dreaming of long hazy days on the beach or strolling around cultural delights on a city break. One chore you still have to do before you head out on your holiday is packing, and even before that selecting your holiday wardrobe.
Holiday Wardrobe – Summer 2012
So we’re here to help, with our guide to the basics you need for any holiday and what to pack for a city break and a beach holiday. We’ll also give you some tips on how to pack your suitcase to ease the stress of those few hours before you head to the airport, ready to start your much deserved break.
The City Break
The city break wardrobe we have worked on is for a summer, mild to hot destination.
Womenswear – City Break
- Boden Fun Dress
- Boden Long Sleeve Breton Top
- Anglomania Twisted Trousers at Selfridges
- Blonde & Blonde Vest Top at BANK Fashion
- ASOS Demand Satin Trainers
- The Editeur Red Valentino Leopard Print Ballet Pump
- Reiss Lace Shorts
Ladies, remember your flat shoes for walking the shopping malls and maybe trainers for seeing the sights. You can go smart with these satin colour block trainers rather than those from your gym back. For later in the day, a top tip is a pair of black heels you are comfortable in and you know can last the night – that can dress up an outfit. Why not mix a Boden print skirt with a nice white teeshirt and take a pastel shade cardigan as cover up if it gets cooler. Skinny jeans and a breton long sleeved teeshirt can be a great smart/casual outfit for wandering the city.
Menswear – City Break
- Boden Italian Stallion Shirt
- H&M Shirt
- Reiss Sammy Tailored Shorts
- Reiss Straight Leg Coloured Jeans
- H&M Boating Shoes
For men, take a smart shirt, mixed with coloured jeans and smart loafers for a well put together look. If it’s warm enough and you’ve got the legs for it, wear a pair of tailored shorts in a neutral colour, with casual boating shoes (you don’t have to get them in this colour) and a smart light blue or light pink, short sleeved shirt to keep cool in the city.
For both guys and gals make sure you take a lightweight jacket that can be folded up in your bag or carried, just in case the weather turns.
The Beach Holiday
So its hot, you’re on the beach or by the pool, probably cocktail in hand. You want to look good and feel great, the vitamin D from the sun will be helping with that, but so too can your wardrobe!
Menswear – Beach Holiday
- Ralph Lauren Polo Shirt at Selfridges
- Prada Sunglasses at Selfridges
- New Look Slip on Shoes
- Le Breve Blue Swimming Shorts
- Jack & Jones Straw Hat at BANK Fashion
Men find it hard to go from the office wardrobe to the casual look. Just remember not to try too hard, stick with what you like and what you know, not necessarily what is “on trend”. Take a Ralph Lauren Polo Shirt in white, to keep cool, team with your blue swimming shorts for a relaxed day time look at the beach. Don’t forget your straw hat to keep your cool and of course some stylish sunglasses.
Womenswear – Beach Holiday
- ASOS Top with Mirrored Palm Trees
- New Look Boutique Black Bandeau Charm Bikini
- New Look Firetrap Sally High Waisted Shorts
- New Look Light straw trilby hat
- Reiss Olympia Braided Leather Sandals
- Reiss Halter Neck Top
- ASOS Photographic Print Tote Bag
Ladies, number one rule – make sure you have a stylish, but big enough beach bag to carry all your bits and pieces to the beach or poolside. This season, despite the colour block, nautical and pastel trend, the black bikini is the saviour of the season. Perfect in various styles to suit all body shapes, why not add some high waisted ice cream hue shorts to add some colour to your cool look. If it’s hot on your holiday make sure you have a cover up teeshirt in white to cool you down, prevent heatstroke and look stylish. We’ve seen gladiator sandals around for some time now but the flat style sandal is here to stay. Perfect for giving your feet some rest from the high heels you wear to the office, team with a cool straw trilby hat and sunglasses to complete your look.
Packing Tips
We don’t mean to sound condescending, but when its the night before your flight, you’ve got a thousand and one things on your mind – how best to pack and what to pack in your hand luggage can easily get forgotten.
- Don’t forget your passport, tickets, visas etc and have them in an inside pocket, easily to hand in your hand luggage
- Make sure, if you’re travelling with others that you share clothes between suitcases – that way if one bag goes missing, you can all still have at least one change of clothes
- Always pack a teeshirt (rolled up), your bikini/swim shorts, 100ml sunscreen and sunglasses in your hand luggage – essentials just in case your bag does go a miss
- Roll up swimwear, teeshirts, light summer dresses (that don’t crease) around the edges of your suitcase to add as buffer to the edge before folding and stacking your other clothes. 5) Travel in your heaviest clothes, it will give you more space for essentials in your weight limited luggage
- Always pack your bag once, make a cup of tea, then go back and unpack and repack – you’re bound to take out 20% of items you don’t really need – it always pays to have a second look
Enjoy your summer holiday, wherever you are off to!
