How to pose in your photos – channelling Miss World!
A Guest Blog by Kerry McNair
I love natural photos and there’s nothing better than capturing those little moments… but there are times when careful posing can turn a good photograph into a great one. Particularly in boudoir shoots or when you’re wearing that very special wedding dress, knowing how to pose can really improve your photos. And the principles are the same, regardless of how much or how little you’re wearing!
The key is not to panic. Many of us are struck with stage fright at the first sight of a camera, which leads to forced smiles and awkward poses. But with a few tips and tricks, your photos will look much more natural and you’ll start to feel more relaxed in front of the lens. It’s time to channel your inner Miss World…
Shoulders back, stomach in
Miss World may get a bad wrap, but those lovely ladies know a thing or two about posing for the cameras. Try it in the mirror and see for yourself!
If you’re facing a camera straight on, the bit between your shoulders is your widest, so turn one shoulder 45 degrees towards the camera – you’ll look instantly slimmer. For the ladies, our largest asset is often our bum, so putting weight on the back foot will naturally push it away from the camera and push your boobs slightly forwards. You’ll find your hip swings backwards and your front leg is slightly bent. Point that toe, pop a hand on your hip and you’ve got it – classic Miss World!
It’s a bit of a cliché but it really does work. So when you’re next faced with a photo opportunity at a wedding or a night out, if you remember nothing else, think of Miss World.
Tilt and smile
Now you’ve got your body language sorted, it’s time to perfect your smile. A grimace can ruin a photo, so this bit’s important!
A little tilt of your head can make all the difference in a photo. Push your chin down and slightly out to avoid a double chin (which can strike at any time if you’re caught unaware!). Finally, there’s nothing better than a beautiful, natural smile – even if you’re conscious of your teeth, I guarantee you’ll look a million times better when you bare them. Smiling with your mouth closed looks strained and awkward, so flash your pearly whites and in the words of that famous song, ‘smile, smile, smile’!
