How to shop hassle free for maternity wear – A Guest Blog
As soon as you learn you are expecting, an internal countdown begins in your brain. You will hear it at all times, whether you are awake or asleep, its tick tock counting down the days and hours to the arrival of your little one. There is not much time, it seems, to fully prepare your life for a baby. One minute you’re enjoying Friday night cocktails with the girls, the next you’re running around the shops, frantically hunting down maternity clothes. So much to do, to plan and to organise.
If you have married prior to getting pregnant, you may notice that having a baby is rather similar to planning a wedding. At first, there is the initial joy and delight at the good news. Then follows a reflective period in which the magnitude of the decision sinks in. After this there is a flurry of trips, planning and purchasing, again followed by a long waiting period. During the wait you spend much of your time going over the original plan and meticulously organising the details. At last, the big day arrives and hopefully all your planning pays off. After all the effort, you feel like you need a long holiday and a few stiff drinks to unwind. With a wedding, this is a viable option. With a baby, not so much.
So, make the most of the time you have left to start shopping for maternity clothes. It might be a good idea to first of all write a list of what exactly you think you are going to need. How formally do you dress for work, for example, and will you be requiring specific maternity sports wear? Remember that as well as outer clothes you will also need to invest in some decent underwear to support your body as you grow larger, as well as comfy and safe shoes.
After you have pinpointed what you need to buy, estimate the budget you can afford to spend. It is important to do so as it can be easy to get carried away when shopping for maternity clothes. I think it’s all part of the nesting instinct – you want to make sure you are prepared for any eventuality!
When you do head to the shops, whether the high street or online, ensure you choose comfy and stretchable fabrics. Cotton and Lycra are probably best. Breathable fabrics are also essential as your temperature will change over the course of the day. A touch of spandex will make waistbands a little more stretchy.
Take your time to choose clothes which not only fit well but which you will enjoy wearing. After all, pregnant woman are said to ‘bloom’ so you will want to make the most of the clear complexion and healthy glow you will hopefully experience in your second trimester. Enlist the help of friends and family on your quest to find maternity clothes and try to enjoy the experience!
