Kitty Gallannaugh Photographer

Kitty, at just 19 is a flourishing freelance photographer. Her ability to capture colour and movement is simply fantastic. I came across Kitty via Twitter and as soon as I saw her website www.kittygallannaugh.com I knew she was one talented lady.

Interview with Kitty Gallannaugh

Kitty is based in London, England and became interested in photography at 6 years old, since then her passion has continued to grow over the years.  She graduated  from Marymount International School, London in 2008 with the full IB diploma at the age of 17. Going on to study her foundation year at London College of Communication where she finished with a high distinction diploma in Arts and Design and was awarded with the “Most improved student” award.

I interviewed Kitty about her photography, her inspiration and where she wants to take her career this year.

What inspires you with your photography?

Memories, for the feelings they fuel me with. My lover Nathan, for the beauty he puts into my life. Songs, for the lyrics they feed my young mind. Photographs, for the colours that satisfy my eyes. People for the way they dress and the strangers that show me habits I want to portray. I think everything I do everyday inspires me. I just get those moments that hit me and I stop what I’m doing to think.

Who would you most like to photograph?

Awkwardly framed girls who have no experience but have all the features that cameras love and long haired people with pretty eyes and hands. I love capturing people who look different but have a sense of innocence about them.  I’m finding more and more beautiful people around my town and it’s a constant source of inspiration. I would love to photograph twins, I always wished I had a twin to photograph.  I would love to shoot either Rosie Tupper or Gemma Ward, both beautiful Australian models. It would be great to capture their more casual side, when they’re not posing for the camera, I think it’d make a beautiful editorial; babydoll faces and big eyes.

Where in the world do you think is the best location for landscape/still life?

Somewhere secluded and untouched. We all love to see pictures of places that inspire us and that we only dream of visiting. I suppose anywhere the sea kisses the sky with long stretches of paradise. I guess that could be any country in the World and it could be right outside our front door. We just need to explore and discover these photogenic places this planet has on offer. I have had the chance to travel to many corners of the World and yet I am always still attracted to home, England. There are so many beautiful lakes nestled in hills, purple heather moors, white sandy beaches which look like travel brochures, everything! I also love shooting in Australia, I travel there a lot. It’s funny how a land on the other side of the World reflects such different light. I love their rain forests and sparse empty spaces too. I think every country has its different perks.

Is your focus on fashion, still life, portraits, advertising?

I like to think I branch into both portraits and fashion. I love being able to capture both worlds, they’re so separate and it feels great to just be able to just switch between the two. I love focussing on fashion for the quirkiness and creative freedom that comes with it and for the incredible people in the industry, but then I love portraits for capturing the individual in a different light. Basically I just love to shoot any kind of people (with a camera of course!).

What are your goals for 2010?

To make this the best year yet. I’m not one for strict resolutions; I just set little goals throughout the year. I’d love to get my freelance career really rolling, take the best photographs I can and just enjoy everything that comes my way.   I just want to enjoy being young and this feeling of freedom I get from photography. I only wish to keep sharing the way I see the World with everyone, it gives me a sense of worth knowing that I can always help motivate someone else.
