Miromoda Showcase – New Zealand Fashion Week 2012

It was a packed house in the Westpac Shed at my final show of New Zealand Fashion Week 2012. The Miromoda Showcase was the hot ticket for the final day of an exciting fashion week.

Formed in 2008, Miromoda is an institute set up to advance the quality status of Māori fashion design, to raise the artistic and professional standards, whilst promoting the appreciation of Māori design. This was the fourth showcase, having debuted in 2009 and it opened with a showcase of Poi. Poi is a traditional Māori performance art as well as relating to the poi that is swung in tethered weights in a variety of rhythmical and geometric patterns. I had my seat on the Front Row next to Kylie Cooke the stylist on New Zealand’s Next Top Model and sipping champagne, I couldn’t wait for this acclaimed showcase.

First down the runway was an amazing use of traditional, natural materials in a theatrical form in beautifully carved outfits. Poto Morgan and Marsh Ranginui Tamihana brought a real sense of drama to the catwalk, with pieces steeped in Māori mythology with a nod to Victorian and Elizabethan times, it was regal, in a dark way.

Pia Boutique was one of my favourite collections shown at New Zealand Fashion Week. Pia Naera designs the most beautiful prints and the graphic designer now know for her fashion presented a refreshing summer collection of digital prints with dreamy vistas and a kaleidoscope of colour. Pia Naera really is the Mary Katrantzou of New Zealand.

I saw the swimwear label Surface Too Deep at the Designer Selection Show earlier in the week and I just love their floral summer swimwear. Founded in 2010, the labels latest collection has a vintage feel with contemporary prints. Truly sumptuous and sophisticated for summer.

Meanwhile, Christopher Huia-Woods brought us amazingly constructed skulls, built into the sides of the models hair. Eery, dark but a pop of colour, creating a visual cacophony of texture meets story telling. Apparently his collection is all about “dressing an MTV generation”.

Another fabulous collection came from Miromoda’s Emerging and Overall Winning Designer, Monique Lynch who presented a womenswear collection called “The long and the short of it”. There was amazing construction of soft but firm fabric and creative pattern cutting techniques. The use of unconventional fabrics really wowed the audience and it felt modern, maybe a little bit space age and conceptually strong.

This isn’t a complete review of all that was the Miromoda Showcase. You can check out the full photos here. It was truly a fabulous show and a perfect way to round off a very successful and very well organised New Zealand Fashion Week. Perfect hospitality – thanks Auckland!
