The Slogan Sweatshirt Trend

It’s a trend that’s been around since early 2013 but seems here to stay. Slogan teeshirts and jumpers are everywhere across the high street and in designers collections this season. Most recently we saw Kim Sears sporting a ‘Parental Guidance’ sweater at the Australian Open finals, giving a little bit of humour to a previous tension filled f-bomb situation. In the past slogan teeshirts have been about political messages, ‘in’ jokes, humorous puns and blatant branding.

To be honest with you, it’s not a trend I thought I would see myself following. I’ve never been one to want to wear a teeshirt showing where I’ve been on holiday (well actually if you see the family photos circa 1997 then that is a little white lie!) and I’m not big on heavy branding on clothing and accessories.

But recently something has just captured me. For me it’s actually more about simplicity. I loved the Topshop Paris jumper, but was too late to grab one in my size. I also loved their “chic happens” sweater from last October. Okay so I’ve worked this out. I’m not just about any slogan, I’m about a French Style. Whether it features the French language or the Eiffel Tower and just the mention of Paris.

Which is why I am completely in love with the Whistles Très Bien Merci sweater. The grey marl is a luxurious texture and the weave has a nice chunky edge to it. The font is simple yet exquisite and it is my new favourite piece of clothing. It’s available direct with Whistles and also at John Lewis, House of Fraser and Asos.

I took it for a spin into London town with simple black wax jeans from Max in New Zealand and brown leather boots from Tu at Sainsbury’s. Country chic, city slick. Perfect for the weekend.

The outfit was boosted by my faux leather and bouclè jacket from H&M and my Fiorelli Croc Bag from Kaleidoscope*.

Words are you accessory here. Normally I would have a statement necklace adorned to my outfit but in this case actions do not speak louder than words. Let the typography do the talking. After all you chose a slogan tee or jumper, let that be the statement rather than a chunky necklace. I reckon it’s a trend that’s here to stay.

What’s your favourite item of clothing featuring a slogan? What do you think of the trend?
