What’s With the Mesh?
Mesh is popping up in every woman’s clothing line nowadays—but not just in one way. Here is a look at a variety of mesh styles emerging, and some tips for how to wear it well.
Big brands are doing mesh
H&M carries a few choices ranging from a too-low-cut shirt with mesh covering the bust, to jersey shirts. American Apparel carries several varieties as well.
Iro is a higher-end company which has several mesh options.

Iro chooses geometric mesh in somewhat chunky cuts. Layered with a contrasting tank top, it creates almost a shimmer or illusion, definitely attracting attention.
Mesh is overshadowed by lace
Sure, it is much plainer, but it can be sophisticated all in its own, and it eliminates the visual complication of flowery detailing. It is a much more neutral material, suitable for anyone.
It has the same effect as lace- it shows just a little bit of skin while still maintaining some modesty.

While some mesh is geometric in design, makers like Feel the Piece provide other options as well. Instead of using contrasting colors, layering with a nude cami provides full coverage and modesty for what we don’t want showing, but still has the appearance of bare skin.
Mesh is versatile
The white Feel the Piece shirt below is used to create a fun, chic look.

However paired with a leather jacket, colored skinny jeans, and bold lips, it has an entirely different, fierce feel.

Mesh doesn’t always have to be transparent, either. It is a fabric characterized by intertwined threads, and it is used in both men’s and women’s fashion. It is functionally used in athletic clothing because it is light and breathable.

Mesh can be done wrong
I’m here singing the praises to mesh, but it is important to use it with caution.
Illusion and mystery are a great way to create a sexy yet modest look, but it’s important to make sure that you are not giving everything away.
Make sure that you are layering properly with tanks and t-shirts, but that you don’t simply throw on a bra and call it a day. This might make a cute swimwear cover, but it is not something that you should go around town in.
Mesh is a great material for layering, and can be accessorized in many ways. Play around with it as an over layer, middle layer, and under layer, and you will find the look that is best for you.
