With a mass of fashion magazines available on the news stands and via the internet these days, there is sometimes too much choice for the fashionista.
One firm favourite of the LadyM Presents team is the Sunday Times Style magazine. A strong, fashion forward thinking magazine that talks fashion sense, applicable to all ages and with some fabulous beauty and lifestyle features too.
Clothes, Cameras and Coffee – A Fashion & Photography Blog
One fine Sunday morning, LadyM flicked to the back page of Style magazine and came across the section “What are you wearing?”, featuring Roz, a smart yet savvy, fifteen year old who clearly had a passion for quirkily sourced and well put-together outfits.
Instantly taken by her unique style, LadyM headed to her blog – Clothes, Cameras and Coffee and found a fresh faced approach to fashion photography, well styled outfits and a passionate young lady behind the blog. Intrigued by the stylish blog and creative mind behind it, LadyM interviewed Roz to learn more about her fashion and photography blog, where she gets her inspiration and what’s next for this flourishing talent;
In her profile on her blogspot page Roz details “I like to be inspired and reading books is one of my favourite routes to dreaming. I’m a nostalgic person who is happy looking through old family polaroids for hours to get design ideas or visiting tiny little vintage and charity shops off the beaten track. Life is too lovely to be wasted, meaning that my days are usually crammed full of creative projects and ideas”.
An Interview with Roz, fashion blogger behind Clothes, Cameras & Coffee
Q: When was the Clothes, Cameras & Coffee blog created and what was the inspiration for the type of blog you work upon?
A: I created it in June 2009, after being inspired by blogs such as Sea of Shoes. In fact, a good friend originally introduced me to the existence of ’fashion/style blogs’, so I suppose I have her to thank! I didn’t have a specific aesthetic when I started out. However, I quickly identified what I really enjoyed. Thus it has evolved to showcase a mixture of vintage and charity shopped styling in rural backgrounds, with a smattering of my own photography.
Q: What is your inspiration in selecting the topics you discuss, what kind of angle are you taking?
A: I write about a range of things – usually recent events, or something that links to what I’m wearing in that particular post. For example, I once created a dress made of strips of photo negatives, and used that post to start a debate about negativity. But themes that often reoccur are books, films, photography, my love of Jaeger, family stories and as I am British, the weather.
Q: Where do you source your fabulous outfits for your blog? Are they items from your own wardrobe?
A: My clothes come from three main sources: charity shops (cheaper, ethical and you can find some really unique items), vintage shops and family hand-me-downs. I was very lucky in that the large majority of my relatives have been hoarders – meaning lots of silk scarves, gloves and hats for me! If I do shop on the high street, then Topshop is my favourite – especially the shoes. I also find some second hand/ vintage clothes on eBay.
Clothes, Cameras & Coffee blog posting “To bend with apples moss’d cottage trees”:
“The idea for this outfit started with the cape, purchased at the St Michaels hospice charity tent/ shop at the Big Chill for a mere £10! I may be, well, slightly obsessed with capes this season – one of my favourite of the current trends. From there it was grey, grey and umm.. more grey! The dress underneath is my equivalent of a comfort outfit – it’s incredibly soft and easy to wear. I customised it with the blue/ turquoise edging around the neckline while on work experience. The grey ankle boots were from Topshop, and both the silk scarf (in my hair) and striped gloves were inherited from my great-grandma. I love the colour grey – reminiscent of typical British weather, and it goes with everything – not having the starkness of white or the boldness of black”.
Q: Where do you find other people to feature in your blog? How do they make the grade?
A: The majority of my blog is made up of my own styling and photography (all the models I use are my friends!), but I do occasionally feature up and coming creative individuals – like designer Charlotte Taylor and photographer Saga Sig. I have to really love or admire someone else’s work to want to feature them.
Q: Who are your favourite designers, boutiques, sources of outfit inspiration?
A: Like a lot of other people, I am big fan of Christopher Bailey’s work for Burberry. Other favourite designers/ brands include Vivienne Westwood, Jaeger, Betty Barclay, Erdem and Paul Smith. Three stand out shows for me this season have been Bora Aksu, Rochas and Mary Katranzou. My outfit inspiration ranges from day to day, sometimes I create a certain persona (like a ballet dancer) and work from there. Or it might be a classic film, book or a picture of my grandma that inspires my outfit. I’m also informed greatly by the weather, I’m feeling pretty autumnal at the moment, and that’s reflected in colours, textures and backdrops.
Clothes, Cameras & Coffee blog posting “Rust and Lace”:
“I was feeling very inspired by early Autumn - so I chose a rust and bark palette of colours with lacy additions. The day started out beautifully and gradually progressed to stormy, providing an interesting array of background colours and lights throughout. There were ominous drops of rain every now and then, but thankfully it held off. The first outfit is made up of a thrifted Laura Ashley jumper dress, a thirties lace camisole I’d bought the day before at a local ‘flea market’ (£5!), and my favourite seventies belt. The skeleton leaf necklace was given to me by my grandma and the lace up heels were for christmas.”
Q: Who is your target audience and who would you love to see/hear discussing your blog?
A: My target audience tends to be those who enjoy a creative approach to style/styling. Also I hope (humbly) to appeal those who are interested in, and appreciate editorial style photography. And as far as who I would love to see it? Someone in the arts or fashion world that I really respect – like Tim Walker or Grace Coddington. I suppose one can dream!
Q: Have you seen the fashion industry or trends change in the last few years?
A: Well, it seems to change every six months – depending on what is the style ’du jour’! I wouldn’t say I actively follow trends – but I do like to interpret some of the looks with my own charity shop (or sometimes homemade) versions But I have noticed an increase in the relationship between the fashion industry and the internet. For example – Burberry’s live streaming of the shows, and bloggers being invited to fashion events. But maybe I’ve only noticed it now because it’s relevant to me as a blogger.
Clothes, Cameras & Coffee blog posting “Needle in a haystack”:
“It felt very much like I was a child in the 1950s running around and climbing on these golden stacks. In turn, the outfit was very fifties inspired too. My mum bought this silk Zara skirt from a charity shop for me, aptly pointing out it was ‘very Prada this season’ – I’ve taught her well! It was a fair few sizes too big though, so I elasticated the waist one rainy weekend, and it has now become a steadfast staple of my wardrobe. To this I added a woollen Jaeger tank top – worn back to front, as I love the colour, but not the V-neckline! The leather belt is ‘thrifted’, the watch pendant from eBay and vintage watch, leather gloves and handbag were all inherited from one of my great-grandmas.”
Q: Is your ultimate career to be a stylist? Do you want to work in the world of fashion?
A: It’s definitely a path I’m interested in exploring – however I think my first choice would be a photographer (maybe doing the styling too). I’m also interested in things like writing and theatre as well – I’m still considering my options, and am very torn between wanting to study English Literature at University, or pursuing a fashion industry based design and photography route. I know I want to do something creative with my life though, and my aim is end up being self-employed/ freelance. Currently my blog is a great way of combining all my interests.
Q: What is next for Clothes, Cameras & Coffee? What are your goals for 2010/11?
A: Firstly I want to continue doing as much styling, photography and writing as possible – I really love the process and rigour of running a blog. But I’ve got a few ambitious shoot and design ideas lined up (some hopefully quite challenging), as well as a blog project called ‘Mummy’s Scissors’ – an experiment in viral style, combining elements of DIY jewellery with an absolutely non-profit motive.
A flourishing fashion blogger
Roz’s blog posts are extremely well written, you can feel the colours she is discussing and the textures spring alive from the photographs. It is well thought out, expertly styled and inspiring when you have that “What shall I wear?” wardrobe moment.
