There is a certain style, grace and elegance that permeates all aspects of pearl jewellery – such as necklaces, earrings and pendants and, for this reason, it is little surprise that pearls are seen with such frequency on the silver screen and on our television screens.
Pearl Jewellery in Movies and Television
Not a day goes by when you won’t see some elegant lady wearing some form of pearl jewellery on television or in the cinema and it isn’t just confined to film-making of yesteryear – pearl necklaces, earrings and pendants are as big today as they ever were.
Movie making is all about bringing characters to life and making the audience believe their authenticity and this is achieved through their acting, of course, but also through the choice of clothing and accessories. The jewellery worn by leading ladies is something that is oft commented on and something which is capable of really bringing a scene to life. With this in mind, it is easy to see why so many wardrobe departments opt for pearl jewellery when they are endeavouring to elevate the elegance and allure of their leading lady.
Just some of the films in which pearl necklaces, earrings and other forms of pearl jewellery are frequently spotted include:
Girl with a Pearl Earring
The premise of the film revolves around a pair of pearl earrings and there are few films which can show so clearly the resonance and appeal of pearls and the film, with Scarlett Johansson in the starring role, was well received and was an excellent platform for showcasing the gravitas of pearl jewellery on the silver screen.
The Great Gatsby
The upcoming remake of the Great Gatsby, starring Carey Mulligan, has found itself in the news recently as it has commission the world famous jewellers, Tiffany & Co., to create the accessories for the movie – including a 1920’s themed array of pearl jewellery.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Perhaps the most famous example of a pearl necklace ever committed to celluloid – the pearl jewellery worn by Audrey Hepburn in the famed 1961 movie is one of the most memorable and striking examples of just how capable jewellery is at bringing a motion picture to life with considerable panache.
It’s not just films that are treated to the presence of pearl jewellery, there are various televisions shows in which it has become a mainstay. Perhaps the most recent example of pearl necklaces and earrings in popular culture can be witnessed in the television show Mad Men – set in 60’s Manhattan where the ladies certainly knew how to dress. Pearl jewellery is undoubtedly the call of the day for the vast majority of the characters in this immensely popular and stylish show.
As you can see, pearls have infiltrated all forms of popular culture and when you consider just how desirable this type of jewellery is and that it has the sort of timeless appeal which is a must, it isn’t too much of a conundrum to see why it has remained steadfastly both in films and on our television screens.

This was a great read! When i think of pearls i think of Audrey Hepburn!!
Love the Acne site, use to be a fan of Asos’ old design, don’t think the new one is as good though!
it was interesting to me that they captured our attention for well over an hour while we talked about other random topics.
I am completely obsessed with pearl jewellery! My latest great love is actually this gorgeous Australian brand of pearl based jewellery called ‘Jae Black Designs’ I think it’s quite new as I have not really heard about it anywhere yet.
The designs are really beautiful and classic and they do an amazing collection inspired by Audrey Hepburn which is stunning! I have a piece which is a long pearl necklace with a bead tassel at the end, so chic! You should have a look at her page.
