Guest Blog: Spring/Summer Fashion – Denim

Ok, enough about the sales now; yes, they’re still going on and yes, there is a wonderful, cut price world of “I can definitely squeeze into that for that price” online sales still to be discovered away from the seventh ring of Hell that is the live shop floor right now, but come on, we’re half way through January. It’s more than time that we left 2012′s fashion hangovers behind and turned a gleaming eye to the future.

Spring/Summer Fashion – Denim

Now granted, you may well be feeling slightly financially and physically worse for wear, thus embracing an expensive new wardrobe that you may or may not have some trouble doing up the zips and buttons of right now may not fill you with the same unqualified joy as it will do as soon as you get this month’s pay check and remember that February is a short month. In fact, so immersed in the January blues and detox may you be, you may scoffingly turn your head away from these words and turn your attention back to the calorie guide on the back of the rice cake packet you were scrutinising moments before. Ah, but that, dear reader, is where you are going wrong. Why, some of SS13′s key trends are entirely manageable in the moment and will require you to make only the briefest of updates to your wardrobe; consider it akin to giving an old friend a bit of a makeover, after she’s had one too many festive tipples. With that in mind, may I draw your attention to denim and how best to embrace it over the coming year.

The Relaxed Fit

From the boy-fit (as seen at Morello and See by Chloé) to Balmain’s more tailored approach, which took some serious cues from the 80s ̶ another big trend of 2013, this season the drainpipes are taking a back seat; the navel-grazing ‘mom jean’ the more sinister aspect of this, which is also making an appearance. After a particularly miserable afternoon of trying on skinny jeans (which may or may not have resulted in me sobbing, one leg in up to the knee ̶ which was as far as it would go ̶ in a pair of skinnies in a Gap changing room, I gleefully embraced this trend. I also caught an unwanted glimpse of my backside once when wearing. Tread carefully.

Dungarees

Yep, you heard me: what may be referred to by some as the ‘denim onesie’ is big news over at Topshop. Get it right and you can be channelling Demi Moore circa making pottery look sexy (not something to be scoffed at); get it wrong and you’re in Dexy’s Midnight Runners‘ territory. Frankly, I could do without the hassle.

Double Denim

It’s out there. It was a particularly big hit at Milan and Paris fashion weeks and, once again, Balmain are culprits. Moving on.

Daisy Print

Excellent news if you, like me, cover yourself in florals whenever possible. A big trend last summer, which happily continued in AW12/13 with the brilliant ‘winter floral’ (think bolder prints and darker shades), the print is sticking around in a big way for 2013 and denim is just one of its many incarnations. Ladies, decorate your denim with daisies.
