How to Create a Vintage Look in Your Bedroom

The vintage look is a timeless, elegant style that exudes feminine luxury and what’s more, it’s an inexpensive and relatively easy look to create in your bedroom! The trick is to know what colours, shades, patterns and shapes work together to create a seamless classic style; although the vintage look is easy to create, when you get it wrong, it can go so very, very wrong but have no fear! You’re not alone in your endeavours to create a stunning vintage room and we’re here to help.

How to Create a Vintage Look in Your Bedroom

First of all, there’s no ‘vintage template’ that you can follow as the look is all about your personality, your beautifully quirky style and how you stamp that style on to the way you decorate. There are, however, guidelines and hints and tips to create the basic style that you can then customise to your heart’s content.

Soft Luxurious Colours

If you love big, bold and bright colours then the vintage look probably isn’t for you; it’s all about soft earthy colours to enhance the intricacies of delicate patterns and create an elegant, traditional style with a big splash of personality; play around with your favourite soft shades of cream, grey, pale pink and even green and blue.

Delicate Traditional Patterns

If you’re struggling for inspiration or if creativity isn’t really your thing then you can’t go wrong with delicate, traditional patterns. Intricate, pale and faded patterns on your walls or maybe even on a rug is something that instantly gives a vintage feel to almost any room. You can mix and match patterns and colours but be careful not to go over the top; aim for two or maybe even three but any more than that and your room could become a mess of different, conflicting patterns that would give anyone a headache.

Reuse and Recycle

Your furniture plays an enormous role in the overall feel and look of a room and when you’re going vintage, you don’t have to spend a fortune! Go to charity shops, junk shops, car boot sales and auction houses to find some beautiful old furniture in the French style with curved, period lines; don’t worry if they’re in a bad way, you can fix them up and give them a lick of pale grey or white paint. Be careful not to paint away that antique charm though!

It’s all about the Finishing Touches!

When you look at pictures of expertly designed vintage rooms, you’ll see that there’s been a lot of attention paid to the ‘finishing touches’; that means everything from the roller blinds that complement the patterns on the walls to quirky little objects hanging from coat pegs and empty picture frames leaning on a shelf. This is where you can really let your imagination run wild and show off your personality and individual style.

Don’t be afraid to do what you feel is right in your room; if you’ve found five different patterns that you think work perfectly together- go for it! If you think cushions with a bright, bold colour will complement your wallpaper then run with it! Using soft colours, delicate patterns and old furniture are just tips to create a vintage feel but no matter what look you’re going for, it always comes down to those all-important finishing touches!
