The New Year is a time for reflection as well as a time to move forward, and if we look back over 2012 there is certainly a lot to remember. This was a year for sports and exercise, with the Olympics and Paralympics dominating public interest. Even after the last medal was given out we have been continuously encouraged to take to the track, field or pool. Yet sports can’t be done in high-heels; can they?
Keeping Fit in High-Heels
After a fantastic Christmas hundreds of men and women have resolved to take more exercise throughout 2013. Indeed it was the number one New Year’s resolution this year. For those of us who can’t catch, throw or kick and consider extreme shopping the only acceptable way sports and fashion can mix however, 2012 proved us wrong. Stella McCartney’s Olympic kit drew attention to the extensive market for fashionable sportswear from Converse to Adidas; the days of jogging in ragged sweatpants and your dad’s old t-shirt are over. The era of the wedged sneaker has begun, however I can’t imagine Jessica Ennis adopting them for the track!
In the wake of their Olympic success team GB’s medal winners have continued to remind us of how active they all are, while the rest of us curl up on the sofa to watch. Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton and gymnast Louis Smith tied on their dance shoes and joined the celebrity cast of Strictly Come Dancing, whereas boxer Luke Campbell and gymnast Beth Tweddle have taken to the ice in what is proving to be a sensational new series of Dancing on Ice. Over the last couple of years we have become obsessed with Strictly and Dancing on Ice. Indeed the Christmas special episode of Strictly Come Dancing attracted 8.3 million viewers. Yet Strictly is also a weight loss sensation. During the latest series Lisa Riley dropped four dress sizes and all while wearing not only high heels, but spray tan and sparkle. As Pamela Stephenson observed; ‘Strictly Come Dancing is the best fat camp in the universe!”.
The answer is simple then, while most of us can’t spend ten weeks in the dance studio Ballroom dancing certainly offers a fun and glamorous way to lose weight. An exercise class where it is compulsory that you buy a new pair of sparkly shoes – even Zumba doesn’t offer you that! Dance classes are really easy to find, every village hall seems to have caught Strictly Fever, and it is easy to get good quality dancewear at a reasonable price. So no excuses, go put on your dancing shoes and shimmy away that weight!
