Madeleine Thompson – Relaxed Elegance
In the ten minutes or so, every so often in the day when we have a coffee and browse Twitter we came across a fabulous knitwear collection from the talented knitwear designer Madeleine Thompson and we’ve decided we want our Autumn wardrobe to start with her key pieces that are a perfect mix of slouchy style and elegance.
“It all began with a humble beanie”
In 2006, after struggling to find a beanie in stores with the right mix of slouch and elegance that is now her trademark, Madeleine designed herself a cashmere one. Friends began asking her to copy it for them and before long the word had spread and the Madeleine Thompson beanie was seen on Sienna Miller & Agyness Deyn. However, it wasn’t until a Vogue editor asked Madeleine where they were stocked (which they weren’t) that she realized she might have a business.
Today Madeleine Thompson can be found all over the world and is available to everyone.. we’re coveting almost all of her collection this season and the brand produces three womenswear collections each year, all of which are knitwear, predominantly cashmere.
Madeleine Thompson clothing is seen on women from Samantha Cameron to Lily Allen to a certain future Queen! And of course they still make the beanie, which remains a bestseller.
Who is Madeleine Thompson?
A childhood divided between Hong Kong and London has resulted in an eclectic set of influences for knitwear designer, Madeleine Thompson. Today, she is just as likely to be found having a cup of tea in her West London Mews as sitting in her Chinese factory chatting away in fluent Cantonese.
After working in the buying department at Hong Kong’s most prestigious department store, Lane Crawford, and next as a designer at Seibu, Madeleine began her own label. Madeleine has a singular vision: to create clothing that enables the ultimate off-duty elegance – perfect for the LadyM Presents team.

The Madeleine Thompson team pride themselves on producing clothing that is simple, a little bit different, and always, always super comfortable. The good news is they are obsessed with quality & comfort. Elegance is the cornerstone of everything Madeleine designs. They consider their clothing the ultimate uniform for elegant off duty ‘moments’ from Saturday brunch to a walk in the park to the Monday morning Starbucks run. We love the comfy looking wool mix dresses to the sweaters with sequined elbow pads. The classic short dresses and the calypso skirts that are edgy yet smart and the tops that can take you from the office or design studio to the coffee shop or bar.
