Miracles Do Happen: Macadamia Hair Oil Review

Dearest reader, it would be remiss of me to review any hair products without first explaining to you the state of my hair. So here we go…confession time. I’m a natural brunette (I think. Quite frankly, I could have electric blue hair and I wouldn’t know, I’ve tampered with it so many times), but I never felt right.

Yes, darling readers, I was a blonde trapped in a brunette’s body, and I desperately wanted to find the ‘real’ me, trichologically speaking.  At the age of 19, I summoned up the courage to whisper those words known to terrify a hairdresser when spoken from the mouth of a brunette: ‘Could we maybe try and get me….blonde?’

Amelia’s Hair History

Try we did. And for a very long time, things were dreamy. Caramel and champagne highlights gradually filled my hair until I was an all over blonde. My thick, strong hair held up remarkably well, even as the peroxide steadily encompassed my head, leading me ever more towards the path of the platinum blonde. I’d done it! My hair had been conquered, the darkness vanquished, and a gleaming halo of gold streamed in its place. It might still have been fine, had I continued going to a hairdresser. Unfortunately, due to a lethal combination of lack of funds and the encouragement of an overzealous home-dyeing friend, I nervously purchased my first bottle of pre-lightener, grabbed some home dye, and went for it.

Hair Woes

I hardly need to tell you now that my hair soon fell into utter disrepair. I survived a year without the glint of hairdressers’ scissors glancing over my locks. A year of stinking peroxide, of ‘dark blonde’ dyes that turned out purple, of ‘fingers crossed’ as I attempted to salvage my hair. It’s a miracle it didn’t all fall out overnight. At the end of the year, I was frazzled, and so was my hair. Fraying, shapeless, damaged, bleached, lustreless. I crawled back to my hairdresser, (pony) tail between my legs, so to speak. I hugged her. I admitted defeat. She touched my hair and managed to conceal her horror, and then she got to work.

Macadamia Oil – the wonders!

I’d heard a fair amount about Moroccan Oil, Macadamia Oil, and Argan Oil, but had always been a bit wary about trying them myself. I think it was the ‘oil’ element, making me worry that my hair would turn into a slick, or feel weighed down. Anyway, on my last trip to my long-suffering hairdresser (that’s Gemma at The Chapel in Tunbridge Wells, I can’t recommend her enough), she stroked something delicious smelling through my hair at the end of the session. Intrigued, I asked her what it was (I’m a giant nuisance at the hairdressers, I love to have a running commentary.) She informed me it was one such hair oil, and that it was one of the best things I could do for my hair.

Coincidentally, I’d just been asked to review Macadamia Oil for this very site for Macadamia Hair, and I told her so. She stopped, leant forwards and looked my reflection in the mirror right in the eye. “Amelia”, she intoned, “For the love of God, please, please use it”. Sobbing into the leave-in conditioner, she continued “your hair needs it…please…..” And who was I to turn down such heartfelt angst? I used it on dry hair post blowdrying, and I was converted straight away. Macadamia Oil smells delicious – rich, deep, slightly fruity – and while it feels slightly sticky on the hand, it goes on like an absolute dream.

In fact, the fact that the texture is fairly thick is perfect, because it means it doesn’t slide out of your hand and all over your ultra clean white jeans and beautiful chiffon top. Not that this has ever happened to me. Ahem. Anyway, you just smooth it evenly over your hair, and I concentrated a lot on the ends of mine, as they’re the most frazzled. The results were instantaneous: my hair acquired a luminescent gleam, looked and felt smooth, AND didn’t feel weighed down. Touché, Macadamia Oil, touché. For me, it’s a winner on all counts, and an utter no brainer.

Even LadyM was convinced of the power of Macadamia Oil during a trip to Guatemala last year, when she went to a Macadamia nut farm and realised how good the nuts are for the skin, hair and nails. It really is the secret to healthy hair. The products at Macadamia Hair combine the oils from Macadamia nuts and the uniquely rare Argan seeds from Morocco. According to Macadamia Hair, “Together, Macadamia oil and Argan oil replenish the hair’s natural emollients with the high content of essential fatty acids found naturally in both of these exceptional oils. The combined benefits help to nourish and protect the hair from harmful UV rays while repairing hair follicles for improved elasticity and shine’.

Not only will I be repurchasing the Macadamia Oil, I will buy vats of the stuff. I’m also intrigued by their other products, including Healing Oil Spray, Rejuvenating Shampoo, and Leave-In Cream. The Healing Oil Treatment that I used also promises to extend the life of colour treatments, and reduce drying time by 40%-50%.

Check out www.MacadamiaHair.co.uk to see the full range of products, including some divine Christmas Gift Sets (which I may well gift to myself…) This is one product you really need to try yourself – after all, if it can help out the disaster zone I like to call my hair, it can help you too.
