So it’s the start of 2012, and like most women you are committing yourself to diets (or trying to), signing up to gym memberships (and never going) and you think the ice cream in the freezer is taunting you. Well listen up, there are pain free solutions to a happy you that does not involve, fitness, surgery or bland food.

Did you know that a new hair style can completely change the way a person sees themselves?  According to researchers, women who dye their hair experience an increase in feelings of attractiveness to the opposite sex and general confidence.  For many women, their hairdresser is one of the first people they call when they are experiencing life changes.  Colourist Kyle White, witnesses hundreds of women walking through his door each year asking for hair makeovers. He stresses the importance of actually listening to a client about she feels or how she wants to feel.

I am sure I’m not alone here when I say that if I have experienced a break-up, the first thing I want to do is ring my hairdresser for a new drastic look. It’s about identity, letting go of the old you and embracing the new you.  “I see so many women drastically changing their colour at the end of a relationship that I’ve coined it the “breakover”—instead of a makeover” White says.

For the most part, a new style can be an intrinsic step of the healing process.  When women embrace a new style and colour they automatically feel more sexy, content and confident, and what’s perfect is that you don’t have to run 6 miles or eat lettuce leaves to achieve it! Hair is your identity, and if you wish you can change that and become a come different person altogether. It’s the perfect January detox.

So what colour hair colour to go for?

In White’s experience he sees more women asking to go blonde – the lighter the hair, the brighter they feel.  “A lot of people feel they’re trapped in the wrong hair colour” he says. If you are not daring enough to completely change colour, even adding a few lighter highlights can really lift your mood, especially in these dull months.  People who opt for darker locks can be accused of wanting to ‘hide-away.’ However, dark hair can be sexy and mysterious, and there is certainly nothing wrong with those. Although dark can be beautiful, as White points out, if you are fair-skinned avoid dark shades as “it’s hard to see yourself without the brightness around your face. You just feel washed out”, he explains.

In recent years, it is not only blondes that are having ‘more fun.’ Red is the new blonde. Women opting for red hair associate the colour with honour and courage. It’s vibrant and will draw attention…good attention. Gentle copper highlights can have the same effect, sexy but subtle.   Celebrities have exacerbated this craze. The latest celebs to embrace the redhead look are Drew Barrymoore and Blake Lively.   If you are more of a ‘do-it-yourself’ girl, Clairol’s Nice N’ Easy Perfect 10 has been tipped by consumer analysts as the best hair dye. Who knew that achieving luscious locks could have such a positive effect? But it does work.
