Guest Blog: 5 Tips for Kicking Workplace Junkfood
Taking the time to pack a healthy lunch for work is one thing; fighting temptation is a whole other thing. When your office is surrounded by great take out shops and everyone at the office is digging into their cheeseburgers or pizzas, it can be really difficult to eat the carefully packed lunch you made!
Don’t Ever Miss Breakfast
The first rule which you have probably heard thousands of times is not to miss breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and by eating a healthy breakfast you can last until lunch without giving into the hunger pains.
Always eat your breakfast before leaving the house, this way you won’t be tempted to stop and buy that buttery croissant at the local bakery or grab some doughnuts as you make your way into the office to enjoy with your first cup of coffee.
Drink Plenty of Water
What is the first thing you do when you get to work? Make a cup of coffee perhaps? Try cutting back on your caffeine intake, if you feel you cannot survive without your morning coffee, have a glass of water at hand to sip between your sips of coffee.
Drink plenty of water throughout the day, this can help with hunger pains and can ensure you remain well hydrated. This is so important especially in offices that have the heating or air conditioning on the entire time, you can easily mistake thirst for hunger which can leave you grabbing for that hamburger rather than just drinking a glass of water.
Healthy Snacks
Keep a selection of healthy snacks in your desk drawer and in the fridge at work to help you fight the temptation of running out to the nearest fish and chip shop. Healthy snacks such as dried fruit, rice cakes, granola bars, yoghurts, fruits and salad greens can be so useful when trying to eat healthily in the workplace.
Keeping these healthy snacks on hand will reduce your urge to head to the local shop and help you keep your eating habits healthy where possible at work.
Try Something New
If you take an apple to work with you every single day, spice it up by adding some strawberries or a pear to the lunch box and see how you go. Adding variety can keep you interested and ensure you don’t steer away from your healthy eating lifestyle.
Don’t Eat at Your Desk
The biggest mistake you can make is eating lunch at your desk. While you are sitting at your desk you don’t concentrate on what you are eating and rather concentrate on the phone ringing or your email, this way your body can’t tell you when it’s full.
Find somewhere to eat, whether it’s in the office kitchen or outside in the sunshine, concentrate on each mouthful of food you have and you will feel full and not be as tempted to head off to buy that cream doughnut you have been eyeing out all day.
