This week on BBC Radio Kent’s “Talking Fashion” spot, it’s all about a good wardrobe clear out. Since there’s a few rainy days ahead, now is as good a time as any to stay warm inside and give your wardrobe a good sort out. Make room for those Spring/Summer pieces you have your eye on and find all those items you forgot you had!
The whole process can be like shopping without spending any money. So too can Swishing! Now, I promised radio presenter Dominic King that this wasn’t anything dodgy, far from it, it can be a great night out!
Swish your way to a new wardrobe
Are there pieces in your wardrobe that you haven’t worn for a while and no longer ache to wear? Of course you can put them to good causes in the charity clothing bins at the recycling centre but swishing is the way forward.
Swishing is a concept from Futerra, the UK’s leading sustainability communications agency. Swishing literally means “ to rustle clothes from friends”. It’s a way of clearing out good pieces from your wardrobe that you no longer wear and taking your pick of other fashionistas wardrobe rejects. So a swishing event is always a great idea, there are plenty held around the country (there’s one this Saturday, 19th January at Grosvenor Gloucester Road Casino, London) and you can host your own too. Find a great space; either your own home, a boutique willing to open it’s doors or a school hall. Set up some rails, provide some drinks to get the shopping juices flowing and invite your friends and family.
Swishing – The concept
- Everyone must bring at least one item of quality clothing.
- You will have half an hour to browse before the swish opens.
- No item may be claimed before the swish opens.
- As soon as the swish is declared open, everyone may take what they want.
- Remember no elbows, hair pulling or hiding of your finds.. play fair ladies!
Pre-Loved Fashion Finds
This week we’ve already talked about the pre-loved fashion revolution with BuyMyWardrobe, an exciting new online destination to buy and sell pre-loved designer fashion. There are so many great pre-loved, vintage, designer dress agencies and boutiques around the county and country. In Tunbridge Wells there is Love Is Boutique on Church Road, a designer dress agency that stocks a fabulous range of designer and high end clothing and gets some great hauls from fashionistas and celebrities. A perfect place to sell unwanted items as well as to buy. Other options include Carré-Rouge, an on-line dress agency based near Tunbridge Wells, Don’t Wear it Anymore, an online boutique, Courting Lily from Folkestone and A la Mode, a vintage fashion boutique in Faversham.
Just google ‘pre-loved fashion’ or ‘vintage boutiques’ for your area to find the best fashion destinations to take your unwanted items to and buy new pieces for your self!
