The Advantages of Using a Gym Over the Outdoors

The Advantages of Using a Gym Over the Outdoors – A Guest Blog

There are so many advantages to using the gym over working out at home or outdoors. You will be more likely to exercise, will work harder, socialise and not get so many injuries or health issues during exercising.

You will more likely be encouraged to exercise

Working out in a big group in an exercise focused environment can boost your motivation and will make you work harder. It is proven that you are much more likely to work out if you just put your gym clothes on and head the gym than if you are planning on excising at home. You can easily be distracted and find excuses for doing other things than actually getting outdoors and exercising.

Controlled temperatures and atmospheres

Let’s face it; our British weather is nothing to boast about. Sure, there are good days when the sun is out at you cannot wait to put on your trainers and head out for a run, but those days are few and far between, especially when it gets to the cooler months. Running when it is cold is not a terribly great experience. The cold chill sets into joints and muscles stiffening them which can make running extremely painful. Then there is the rain. Running gear does not come 100% waterproof. Specially designed jackets may be made out of waterproof material but the seams are left unsealed to improve breathability. Those that are sealed make the jacket extremely hot to wear when running and you could over heat within minutes. If you are not properly protected from the rain you could catch a cold or worse. Luckily gyms are dry and cool. If you get too hot when on the running machines they have built in fans to blow fresh air in your face.

It is safer

If you were to run into trouble on a rural run or suffered a health issue it may be a while until anyone discovers you and that could be fatal. If you were to suffer an injury or issue whilst exercising in a gym it is not difficult to just stop what you are doing and wave over a staff member to help. Imagine being on a long run and half way through realizing you cannot go on any more because you have badly sprained your ankle? It is painful to walk, you do not have your phone on you and the closest residential estate is a mile away.

It is better for your legs

Using a gym is better for your legs and knee joints over the harsh great outdoors. Pacing the pavements can put a lot of strain and impact on your legs and over time you can start to wear your kneecaps away. Even if you chose bare foot running over road running the risk to injury on your feet and legs is much higher than that of using a treadmill. Using a running machine for a softer surface to concrete and mean that even when your shoes start to wear down a bit you will still have less of an impact running. A gym also offers the cross trainer – a great piece of machinery for lessening the impact on the legs whilst still giving them a good cardiovascular workout.
