Three New Edgy Winter Looks for Men 2012 : A Guest Blog

After the intense colours and trendy takes of last season, the mens winter 2012 fashion has taken a gothic turn. Making a big bang with bomber jackets, fitted suits, and heavy dark fabrics, this winter looks to be a dramatic one with jewel tones and dark textures.

Three New Edgy Winter Looks for Men 2012

Prada and Lanvin introduced giant collars, many lined with heavy fur. Leather, leather, and more leather is popping up in both women’s and men’s winter fashion, including full-length three-button leather suits. Here are three of the most edgy trends for mens winter fashion 2012.

1.The mix of textures

With the onset of fall and winter comes layering and mixing–not just for warmth, the variation also allows for a new edge. Whether it’s blue mixed with black (those usually dissonant dark colours) or leather and, well, anything, the season is prime for refinement. Down jackets coupled with formal slacks, scarves in muted colours, and various blue tones are coupled. Here is an eclectic mix of cashmere and silk, shown here in Berluti:

2. Head-to-toe Plaid

If you ever thought that we would get rid of plaid, do not fear. It is back with a new distinguished twist. Although many of the edgy plaid trends are in traditional red and orange, dark grey and black plaid designs create a muted effect. Trench-length suitjackets, textured wool slacks, and even plaid slippers–Lanvin, Christian Louboutin, and Etro have all sported the new look. Plaid hats and ties are a great way to introduce the trend. Here is Vivienne Westwood’s layered plaid style:

3.Metallic Cap-Toe Shoes

This trend runs the entire gamut of winter trends. The metallic cap-toe shoe has swept across Europe and entered the States this season. It can be found in mens and womens fashion and adds dramatic emphasis to the dressed-up style of fall and winter 2012. It matches perfectly with the jem-tones, the high-fashion formal suits and jackets and gives grey matte tones a new finesse. The style runs from plain tennis shoes shown here by Lanvin:

The vibrance of fall colours will meld into bold, embossed, brocade drama of winter 2012. To be edgy, mix textures and muted dark tones, dress with refined formal style, and add bright rich colours like purple and maroon to add spice. Winter 2012 is packed with conservative and edgy looks for men to experiment and should be remembered for its gothic, minimalist kick in the fashion world.

While I loved the metallic cap-toe shoes, mixing leather with wool did not seem very attractive. In addition, mixing of textures had been done quite efficiently and I loved how they used a shade darker inside out.The question here arises, would guys really be able to pull this off?
