1. Make a natural body scrub

With more skin on show at this time of year, you’ll want yours to be smooth and glowing. To achieve this, exfoliation is key. But rather than using a fancy shop bought body scrub, you can create your own using all natural materials.

Olive oil has been used as a natural skin care remedy for centuries, and can leave your skin feeling soft and supple for days. Combined with rock salt, a natural exfoliant, you’ll have a scrub which is inexpensive and effective. Add a few drops of your favourite aromatherapy oil to enhance the experience.

2. Be gentle on wet hair

If you’re going to be swimming in the sea or a hotel pool this summer, beware of the damage it can do to your hair. Hair is weakest when wet as water breaks down the natural hydrogen which bonds it together when dry. This explains why hair can be styled more easily when it’s still damp.

To protect your hair, you should treat it gently when wet. Don’t grasp the hairs too hard when you squeeze out excess water and use towels to blot hair dry rather than rubbing it. Why not use any beauty vouchers and discounts you might have to buy a leave-in conditioner? This will help keep your locks looking shiny and beautiful.

3. Protect yourself from dry skin

If you’re heading to the seaside this summer, salt water, sand and strong winds can all contribute to dry skin. It’s important to keep your skin moisturised, particularly if it’s prone to dryness, to prevent any cracking or rough patches.

In order to do this, make sure you apply plenty of moisturiser morning and night. The best time to do this is after cleansing when your skin is more receptive to it. If you follow this routine regularly, it will help strengthen your skin and make it look fuller and more youthful – an added bonus.

4. Watch out for the sun

Even though we haven’t had much sun in the UK this summer, don’t be fooled into thinking you can go without sun protection. Whether you’re off abroad or staying put, make sure you use sun cream every time you step outside. Also, be sure to choose a foundation or tinted moisturiser with a minimum of SPF 15.

Your hair also needs protection, as UV rays can cause damage to your follicles. Be sure to wear a hat or use hair products with an SPF. Finally, use a thick, oil-based balm with added sun protection for your lips to avoid chapping.

5. Look after your eyes

It’s not only your skin which needs protection from the sun. If you’re planning on making a trip to somewhere hot, make sure you invest in suitable eyewear to protect against bright light, which can cause damage to your corneas.

Most quality sunglasses protect against UV rays and add a little glamour to any summer outfit. Discounts are often available from brand-name stores, so make sure you use any London eye care vouchers wisely before you jet off from Heathrow.
