There’s something about a brand new year that makes me want to get organised. As soon as I’d celebrated the start of 2012 (and recovered from my champagne headache!), I pulled open my wardrobe and had a clear out.
Fresh Year, Fresh Start, Fresh Wardrobe
As I sorted, I came across pieces I hadn’t worn for years; things that no longer fitted and others I wouldn’t dare wear now. Neon clubwear? What was I thinking?! As I hauled a huge bag to the charity shop, I decided that would be my New Year’s Resolution – to stop buying ‘what’s hot’ and invest in the classics. And I’ve got Gucci’s family motto to help me along the way – ‘quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten’. At least that’s what I’ll be telling my husband!
A wardrobe full of memories
When I look through my wardrobe, I see a few classic pieces that remind me of special times in my life – a vintage handbag, a stunning red coat, a beautiful brooch. I’ll be wearing these timeless items for years to come and along with my trusty LBD, which I’ve worn on countless occasions, they’ll always bring back happy memories.
It’s the same with photos, really. Photographs capture special moments in our lives and a classic image never looks old. I take inspiration from the black and white photography of Audrey Hepburn or Elizabeth Taylor – beautiful shots that could be from any era and will never go out of style.
Capturing that timeless look
I always encourage my clients to think about the clothes they’re wearing and where they’re being photographed, whether they come to me for a makeover beauty shoot, boudoir photography or a professional business portrait. Particularly with wedding photography, a timeless look will ensure your photographs still look beautiful in years to come. And when it comes to the shoot, it’s my job to capture each frame in a classic style that will really stand the test of time.
I know I’ll still buy the odd current fashion piece because, well – who can resist a really great trend? But I’ll make sure my wardrobe always holds those classic pieces in black a white, which will never date – just like a beautiful photograph.

The last photo is me:) I totally agree with Kerry. I myself wear timeless classics and always encourage my clients to do the same. We are all different and not all of us will look good in Audrey Hepburn style therefore you need to find your own version of classic. I also agree with investing in great pieces as they will really last you for ages and they usually work with any trend. The easiest way to buy into trend is to accessorize. It doesn’t cost that much and you won’t regret that much when there comes the time to part with a necklace or a pair of earrings. But remember, never to throw out anything that you really love just beacause it’s out of fashion. Trends return. My mum did that a few times and she still regrets it!
Thanks for your comment Kate – can’t agree with you more about accessorizing! It’s the way forward
Great points, Kerry, and lovely photos. So nice to see the lovely photo of Alice at our summer photoshoot.
Fashion and Style are such different things and I love seeing women find their “Style Personality”.
On New year’s Eve I wore a dress I have had for at least 10 years, I updated it with contemporary jewellery and was delighted to get lots of compliments. Keeping tried and trusted classics in your wardrobe means you always have the right thing for the occasion.
Enjoy your streamlined wardrobe.
Hello Kate & Michele,
Thanks for your comments. As both of you are fantastic style consultants do you have any tips on hot accessories for this Spring/Summer. Would love to know.
Thanks,
Kerry
