Winter Weather Wear for Tall Women

Fashion is all about embracing—and accentuating—your best features. For those women who are blessed with height, select clothing and accessories that help you feel confident and draw attention to your assets.

Attention-Grabbing Leggings

If long, toned legs are one of your best features, do not be afraid to flaunt them because leggings and skinny jeans are fashion trends custom-made for you this season. Look for bold colors and detailed patterns or textures to draw attention to shapely calves and thighs. Choose a solid colored sweater dress or tunic to top off the look, or layer a simple blouse under a trench coat or a 1920s inspired wrap with fur trim for winter elegance.

Tall fashion divas should be looking to push the leggings trend to the next level. Consider layering brightly patterned tights under peek-a-boo or ripped leggings for an edgy look. A soft long-sleeved t-shirt, a tailored blazer, and a strand of pearls elevate the edgy feel of these bottoms, and a pair of sleek heels or classic boots finishes the ensemble.

Achieving Balance

Human bodies are inherently disproportionate, and tall women may feel very self-conscious about their perceived imperfections. There are a number of ways that tall women can create the image of proportion through clothing.

For wider shoulders or a larger bust, choose wide v-neck sweaters or tops to create some balance. If you are worried about too much cleavage, layer a cami or tank under the top. Likewise, tall women can carry a much wider pant leg than more petite women. Use an exaggerated flare that begins just below the knee to balance your wider shoulders, or select a pant that drapes smoothly from your widest point for workplace ease and comfort.

Accessories can also help you create proportion. Choose a chunky infinity scarf and oversized sunglasses or layers of big, bold, and exaggerated necklaces or earrings to bring attention to your face if you feel that your bottom half is disproportionate. To break up a long torso or to accentuate a small waist, choose a wide belt with a beautiful buckle or detailed embellishment.

Making Strides: Choosing the Right Shoe

The default shoe for many tall women is a flat, but we do not need to overcompensate for height; the confident, tall fashionista should not limit her footwear choices simply because of a set of numbers. Most runway models stand tall at 5’ 10” or more, and then don a pair of high heels to strut down the catwalk. Confidence is required for this strut though, so practice in heels before heading out the door.

If you are not ready—or willing—to slip on a pair of 6-inch stiletto heels, do not fear. A pair of slight kitten heels is sexy and alluring without the added danger to your knees or ankles. This winter’s fashion trends include heeled boots and booties to keep you both warm and fashionable.

As with any fashion trend, the key is confidence. Make the most of your proportions and dress the reality of your body. Embrace your curves and your height in all of your fashion choices.
