Interior design inspired by fashion – A Guest Blog

Fashion can inspire home interiors perhaps more than most people think. Anyone who has bought curtains with Laura Ashley fabric or a new footstool from Oscar de la Renta is actually combining both fashion and interior design without giving it too much thought.

There are fashion designers that have their own range of wallpaper designs and fabric patterns from which soft furnishings can be made. Fashion designers are no longer just in the clothing market, and interior design can and does take inspiration from the catwalk.

Styles

When vintage styles started taking the catwalk by storm, so did the return of vintage furnishings for the home. Boho styles and shabby chic have also had crossovers between the latest fashions and home furnishings. Modern trends have proved to be popular in recent years as well. Leather corner sofas look clean and stylish and can give an air of luxury to any interior. They are also perfectly functional, just like leather jackets or the popular celebrity trend of leather trousers.

Colours

The latest trend in clothing colours also filters through into interior design. One of the hottest colour trends in recent years has been nude – everyone is in on the trend, from Christian Louboutin, whose nude stiletto heels are the staple of many a celebrity wardrobe, to a multitude of designers whose flesh coloured red carpet dresses can make any woman look demure.

Keeping the home neutral as much as possible can create a relaxed and calming effect. Neutral colours give an atmosphere of tranquillity and are great for every room in the home. Neutrals are also popular with those who are selling their homes, as it gives the property the feeling of a blank canvas, which will allow potential buyers the scope to imagine the home in their own taste and style.

It is also possible to use colour to create optical illusions around the home, rather like people can do with fashion. Darker shades with clothes can help a person look both taller and slimmer, and this also works with rooms. Choosing dark wood kitchen cabinets can really help the room look bigger, as it gives the impression that the ceilings are higher than they actually are. Vertical stripes painted on the walls also help to elongate the walls, so if the home is a little on the small size, incorporating these little tricks just might help.

Patterns

The latest fashion trends (such as floral, stripes or bold solids) hitting the high street clothing stores are also easily carried over into home interiors. The simplest way to keep a home looking on trend is through the soft furnishings. Cushions and curtains, for example, can be easily swapped and changed so that the home is always looking its best. Opting for this method does not need to cost a lot of money. For those wanting a great looking home on a tight budget, buying designer fabric and making these items at home can be an enjoyable project – it can serve as a great hobby, and the home will never be out of style.
